We were in the car and a Christmas song came on about toy wooden soldiers.
J: Those soldiers killed Jesus in the bible.
Me: That is true. but this song is about toy wooden soldiers, they aren't the same.
J: The soldiers killed Jesus. Those soldiers are bad. We are good mommy.
Me: Actually, Jeremiah, we killed Jesus too. We are just like the soldiers. Our sin killed Jesus on the cross.
J: Oh...
Me: But, if we trust in Christ, and ask God to forgive us of our sins that killed Jesus, he will forgive us.
J: God? Like God and the Angel (he is referring to when the angel appeared to Mary to tell her she would become pregnant)
Me: Yes, God. Remember God is Holy and Perfect and has no sin. We are the opposite. We are sinful and so Jesus died on the cross for our sins so that we could have a relationship with God.
J: Sitting in silence!
I realize that the readers of this post are going to be in 2 categories. Some will say, "You just told your 3 1/2 year old that he killed Jesus. I do not agree with that." The others will say, "Yes, that is a hard gospel truth!"
I pray that the gospel will so penetrate our hearts, our children and our families that we will see that even though I just told him that, that is the truth.
He so proudly said that the soldiers were bad and we were good. His morality was shining through and he was so proud. I don't want him to continue thinking he is better than others-that they are bad and he is good. There are a lot of reasons I could give as to why I didn't want him to continue thinking that, but it boils down to what God says about us as sinners.
I am so thankful that the Lord gave us that conversation. I pray that God will use conversations like the one above to turn Jeremiah's heart to Him.
And no, our days aren't filled with these deep conversations, nor do I always know what to say. But today, God gave us this conversation, gave me the words to say to Jeremiah, and I pray there will be lots more.
Isaiah 53:5 "But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. (I added the bold print)
